Gloom Stalker — Sagor från Valoris

The Gloom Stalker haunts the lightless places others dread — the deep caverns, the moonless wilds, the border between the world and the darkness that presses against it. These rangers hunt where nothing should be able to see, and turn that darkness into their weapon: striking from ambush with a speed and ferocity that ends most fights before they truly begin, then vanishing back into a gloom that hides them even from creatures born to it.

It is the deadliest opening act of any archetype. A Gloom Stalker surges forward on the first turn, lands blows steeped in psychic dread, and is gone into the dark before the enemy can answer. They are fortified against the fear their prey feels, slip attacks with a shadow-step of their own, and see clearly in a blackness that renders them all but invisible. To hunt one is to hunt a thing that was already behind you.

3rd Level

Dread Ambusher

You are a master of the killing opener. On your first turn of a combat, your Speed increases by 10 feet, and you add your Wisdom modifier to your Initiative, so you move first and move fast. And with Dreadful Strike, when you hit a creature you can deal an extra 2d6 Psychic damage — usable once per turn, a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier per Long Rest.

3rd Level

Gloom Stalker Spells

The dark keeps a suite of spells always ready: Disguise Self at 3rd; Rope Trick at 5th; Fear at 9th; Greater Invisibility at 13th; and Seeming at 17th — concealment, escape, and terror to fold into your ambush.

Umbral Sight

The darkness that blinds others is your cover. You gain Darkvision out to 60 feet (or extend what you have by 60 more). And while you are entirely within Darkness, you have the Invisible condition to any creature that relies on Darkvision to see — a hunter that even the dark-dwelling monsters cannot find in their own element.

7th Level

Iron Mind

You harden yourself against the terrors of the deep. You gain proficiency in Wisdom saving throws — or, if you already have it, in Intelligence or Charisma saves instead — so the fear and domination that hunt those who walk in darkness find no purchase on you.

11th Level

Stalker's Flurry

Your ambush blooms into a flurry. Your Dreadful Strike's Psychic damage rises to 2d8, and once per turn when you use it you can add one effect: Sudden Strike, an extra attack against a different creature within 5 feet of your target; or Mass Fear, forcing that creature and all within 10 feet of it to make a Wisdom save (DC 8 + your Wisdom modifier + your Proficiency Bonus) or be Frightened until the end of your next turn.

15th Level

Shadowy Dodge

You dance through shadow to confound your attackers. Whenever a creature attacks you without Advantage, you can take a Reaction to impose Disadvantage on the roll — deciding before it's made. And immediately after, hit or miss, you can teleport up to 30 feet to a space you can see, melting away to strike again from somewhere the enemy isn't looking.
