The Oath of Vengeance is sworn in the aftermath of something terrible — a betrayal, a massacre, an evil that slipped through every other guard. Its paladins have looked upon a wrong so grievous that mercy no longer seems like justice, and they have made a grim promise to set it right whatever the cost. They are the avengers, the dark knights, the relentless hunters who will pursue their quarry across the world and through the years and never once look away.

It is the most single-minded of the oaths, and the most terrifying to be marked by. A Vengeance paladin speaks a vow of enmity and thereafter simply cannot be shaken from their target — closing off every retreat, punishing every attack their foe attempts, and in the end sprouting wings to run down anything that flees. They walk closer to darkness than any other paladin, and hold to their oath precisely because the temptation to break it is so very strong.

3rd Level

Oath of Vengeance Spells

Your grim purpose keeps a suite of spells always ready: Bane and Hunter's Mark at 3rd; Hold Person and Misty Step at 5th; Haste and Protection from Energy at 9th; Banishment and Dimension Door at 13th; and Hold Monster and Scrying at 17th — the hunter's toolkit of marking, holding, and running quarry to ground.

3rd Level

Vow of Enmity

When you take the Attack action, you can expend a use of Channel Divinity to swear a vow against a creature within 30 feet. You have Advantage on attack rolls against it for 1 minute — and if it drops to 0 Hit Points before the vow ends, you can transfer the vow to another creature within 30 feet, the hunt simply continuing without pause.

7th Level

Relentless Avenger

No quarry escapes you cleanly. When you hit a creature with an Opportunity Attack, you can reduce its Speed to 0 until the end of the turn, then move up to half your Speed as part of the same Reaction — without provoking Opportunity Attacks yourself. You close the door on their retreat and step through it after them.

15th Level

Soul of Vengeance

The authority of your vow gives you power over your foe's every move. Immediately after a creature under your Vow of Enmity hits or misses with an attack roll, you can take a Reaction to make one melee attack against it, if it's within reach — answering each strike it dares to attempt with one of your own.

20th Level

Avenging Angel

You become the terror of the guilty. As a Bonus Action, for 10 minutes you sprout spectral wings — gaining a Fly Speed of 60 feet and the ability to hover — and radiate a Frightful Aura: any enemy that starts its turn in your Aura of Protection must succeed on a Wisdom save (DC 8 + your Charisma modifier + your Proficiency Bonus) or be Frightened, with attacks against the frightened creature having Advantage. Once used, you recover it on a Long Rest — or by spending a level 5 spell slot.
